Carolyn Carlson

Carolyn Carlson’s career began with the Alwin Nikolaïs Dance-Theatre Company in New York, 1965-1971. Her masterclass teachings continue to instil the principles of a rigorous time-space energy technique and abstract concepts initiated by her beloved master, Nikolaïs. Although she engenders his basic ideas, her work has shifted towards a visual poetry point of view, involving improvisation and compositional explorations enabling the dancer-poet to discover their unique creative impulses for performance and choreography. In 1999, she founded the Atelier de Paris-Carolyn Carlson at the Cartoucherie. She was director of the National Choreographic Center Nord-Pas de Calais in Roubaix between 2005 and 2013. Her company is currently in residency at the National Theater of Chaillot where she will present her last cration NOW in November 2014.
